Prioritize Combating Drugs Over Gaza Concerns

Ro Naulu Mataitini, the chief of Rewa, emphasized the urgent need for national leaders to address Fiji’s escalating drug crisis. He criticized the focus on international issues like Gaza, urging policymakers to prioritize local concerns first. Mataitini stated that Fiji’s communities are overwhelmed by narcotics and existing village regulations are insufficient for tackling this escalating problem.

Urgent Need for Action Against Drug Epidemic

Mataitini called for the establishment of a national body dedicated to coordinating efforts between the government and local communities. He stressed that immediate actions are essential, rather than mere discussions. “We need action, not just meetings,” he said. He underscored the importance of protecting Fiji’s future by concentrating on domestic issues before diverting attention abroad.

Community Initiatives and Local Defense

The Vanua o Rewa has proactively implemented measures to combat drug abuse. Since late 2023, all 52 villages, including those on Beqa Island, have formed crime prevention teams (CPT). These grassroots units consist of ordinary villagers who work as the first line of defense against drug-related activities.

  • Formation of crime prevention teams across all 52 villages including Beqa.
  • Teams emphasize a ‘See Something, Say Something’ policy.
  • High surveillance at Nasali Landing, where about 13,000 residents commute daily.

The CPT members closely monitor key transit points, particularly during peak traffic periods on Thursdays and weekends, to prevent illegal activities. Mataitini pointed out that this local vigilance is crucial for intercepting narcotics trafficking.

Call for National Coordination

Mataitini also mentioned the Great Council of Chiefs (GCC) has advocated for better coordination at the national level, which he believes is currently lacking. He highlighted the need for a central organization that can unify government efforts with community initiatives.

“The GCC wants to see actions and not just meetings,” he stated. Mataitini urged national leaders to collaborate effectively to safeguard future generations from the detrimental effects of drug abuse.
