Cold Snap Persists: Beware of Ice-Related Accidents Despite Spring’s Arrival
The arrival of spring does not eliminate the risk of ice-related accidents. Recent weather patterns in the Daejeon region highlight the dangers associated with fluctuating temperatures and icy road conditions.
Potential Dangers Despite Changing Seasons
On February 2, a severe traffic incident involving ten vehicles occurred on the Cheongyang interchange of the Pyeongtaek-Buyeo expressway. This event serves as a reminder that caution is crucial, especially during the transition into spring.
Weather Forecast and Temperature Variations
According to the Daejeon Regional Meteorological Administration, temperatures from February 4 are expected to vary significantly. In the Daejeon area, lows may plunge to -7°C while daytime highs could reach 9°C. Forecasted lows and highs for nearby locations include:
- Daejeon: -3°C to 9°C
- Sejong: -4°C to 8°C
- Gyeryong: -7°C to 8°C
- Geumsan and Buyeo: -5°C to 9°C
- Asan: -3°C to 8°C
The significant day-to-night temperature differences contribute to the formation of hazardous black ice on roadways, which elevates the risk of accidents.
Previous Ice-Related Incidents
Similar weather patterns last year led to dangerous conditions. On February 4, 2025, black ice resulted in a collision between a 4.5-ton truck and an SUV on the West Coast Expressway. Additional incidents, including multi-vehicle pile-ups on the Iksan-Pyeongtaek expressway, resulted in injuries requiring hospitalization for four individuals.
Increased Risk for Pedestrians
The risk of slips and falls for pedestrians is also growing. Cases of falls on sidewalks and slopes in downtown Daejeon have been reported, underscoring the importance of vigilance in public spaces.
Precautions and Safety Tips
As temperatures rise during the day, the ice on rivers, lakes, and reservoirs weakens, increasing the likelihood of breakage. It is advisable to avoid activities on icy surfaces to ensure safety.
Forecasters predict continued cloudy weather, with a mix of sub-zero and above-zero temperatures until at least February 6. Residents are urged to be particularly cautious of icy paths and black ice on the roads.
