UAE Astronomy Center Predicts February 19 Start for Ramadan 2026

The UAE Astronomy Center has announced that Ramadan is anticipated to commence on Thursday, February 19, 2026. This prediction is shared across the Arab world, according to the Emirates Astronomical Society. Muslims will look for the new crescent moon on Tuesday, February 17, which will officially mark the beginning of the holy month.

Moon Sighting on February 17

If the crescent moon is sighted on the evening of February 17, Ramadan will begin on Wednesday, February 18. However, the likelihood of seeing the moon that evening is low. Ibrahim Al Jarwan, the chairman of the Emirates Astronomical Society, stated, “Ramadan’s crescent moon will be born at 4:01 PM local time on February 17 and will set one minute after sunset.”

Duration and Dates of Ramadan 2026

  • The holy month is expected to last 29 days.
  • Ramadan will conclude on Thursday, March 19, 2026.
  • Eid Al Fitr will be celebrated on Friday, March 20, 2026.

Like all Islamic months, Ramadan can last either 29 or 30 days, determined by the lunar cycle. The exact dates are confirmed by the moon-sighting committee, which includes astronomers, court officials, and advisers from the UAE’s Islamic authority.

Fasting Duration in Abu Dhabi

The duration of daily fasting will vary throughout the month. In Abu Dhabi, Muslims can expect to fast approximately 13 hours and 25 minutes. Ramadan’s timing shifts earlier each year on the Gregorian calendar, meaning this year’s fasting period will be slightly shorter compared to previous years. However, the hours of fasting lengthen as the month progresses.

Significance of Ramadan

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar and holds profound significance for Muslims as it commemorates the revelation of the Quran to the Prophet Mohammed. During this month, Muslims abstain from food and drink from dawn until sunset, which occurs between the fajr and maghrib prayers. Additionally, Ramadan is a period of increased prayer, Quran recitation, and spiritual reflection.

As the holy month approaches, communities engage in preparations, fostering a sense of unity and devotion. The expectations for Ramadan in 2026 highlight its ongoing cultural and spiritual significance for Muslims worldwide.
