UF and Millhopper Family Dentistry Offer Free Dental Clinics in February

Access to dental care remains a pressing issue for many individuals, particularly in Florida. An estimated 6 million Floridians face challenges in obtaining necessary dental services due to financial constraints. In response to this urgent need, Millhopper Family Dentistry, in collaboration with the UF College of Dentistry, is organizing free dental clinics throughout February. These initiatives aim to celebrate National Children’s Dental Health Month while making dental care accessible to those in need.

Free Dental Clinics in February

Millhopper Family Dentistry and the UF College of Dentistry will host several free dental events during the month. Key events include:

  • Care to Share Clinic

    • Services Offered: Fillings, extractions, and cleanings
  • Super Sealant Saturday

    • Date: February 7
    • Time: 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
    • Target Group: Children ages 1 to 17
    • Services Offered: Free dental exams, sealants, fluoride varnishes, and educational activities

Community Impact

These free clinics provide essential care to individuals who might otherwise forego treatment due to cost. Jessica McMillan, an office administrator at Millhopper Family Dentistry, noted that the Care to Share initiative started in 2010 to help those unable to afford routine dental services. The clinic has witnessed increased requests for preventive services over the years, indicating a positive shift towards maintaining dental health.

Alecia McDonald, owner of Millhopper Family Dentistry, emphasized the importance of offering these services to individuals lacking insurance. The initiative aims to break down barriers to dental care, welcoming anyone who is willing to wait for treatment.

Volunteer Involvement

Approximately 75 volunteers, including current and former staff, contribute to these events. Their collective effort ensures that the high demand for services can be met effectively. The Super Sealant Saturday event has involved close to 200 volunteers, providing dental students with valuable hands-on experience while serving the community.

Additional Insights

The Super Sealant Saturday event not only focuses on dental care but also promotes a positive dental experience for children. With themes such as “Toy Story,” it creates an engaging atmosphere, making dental visits less intimidating for young patients. This aligns with research showing that about 40% of individuals experience anxiety related to dental visits.

Both Millhopper Family Dentistry and the UF College of Dentistry are committed to making quality dental care accessible. They encourage community members to attend these upcoming free dental clinics and take advantage of the services offered.
