One Year After Fatal Crash, 10-Year-Old Ramesses’ Inspiring Recovery Journey
Ramesses Vazquez-Viana, who was severely injured in a tragic medical jet crash, has shown remarkable resilience in his recovery journey. At just 9 years old, he suffered life-threatening burns over 90% of his body after the crash in Northeast Philadelphia on January 31, 2025. This devastating incident claimed the lives of six occupants of the plane and two individuals on the ground while injuring dozens more.
Tragic Accident and Incredible Survival
The crash occurred near Roosevelt Boulevard and Cottman Avenue, destroying several homes and vehicles. Tragically, Ramesses lost his father, Steven Dreuitt, and his father’s girlfriend, Dominique Goods-Burke, in the incident. Witnesses reported seeing young Ramesses escaping the burning car, aided by bystanders who guided him to safety.
Following the accident, Ramesses was airlifted to a specialized burn center in Boston, Massachusetts. His mother, Jamie Vazquez-Viana, expressed her faith in his strength through social media, stating, “I ask for prayers.”
Extended Recovery Process
For four months, Ramesses fought for his life at Shriners Children’s Hospital. By May, after undergoing multiple surgeries—including partial amputations of both hands—his progress was evident. Doctors remarked that only his feet had escaped the severe burns. Despite the grim circumstances, Ramesses began to communicate with his family, leading to moments of celebration amid the challenges.
Community Support and Milestones
While in recovery, the community rallied around Ramesses and his family. His classmates and teachers at Mastery Charter Smedley Elementary School organized fundraising efforts to support him. They kept Ramesses’ desk at school ready and sent him care packages with snacks and handmade cards.
- Firefighters in Philadelphia also contributed donations.
- Students wore yellow in his honor and created videos reading his favorite books.
Remarkably, by October, Ramesses celebrated his 10th birthday with significant progress. His ability to move his fingers and toes, improved senses, and heartfelt words to his mother brought joy to his family and community alike. As Ramesses started rehabilitation in Marlton, New Jersey, his physical therapy sessions helped him regain mobility, including walking and climbing stairs.
Hope and Inspiration
In November, Ramesses participated in his first television interview, expressing happiness despite his situation. His powerful message to those facing challenges—”God is there”—resonated with many. His recollection of the crash further highlights his bravery and the bond of love he shared with his father in their final moments.
Home for the Holidays
Finally, one year after the crash, Ramesses returned home in December. His school celebrated with a pep rally, where his mother received a new car donated by a local dealership, highlighting the community’s support.
As Ramesses continues his recovery with additional surgeries scheduled, his story of survival and determination inspires many. His journey reminds us of the strength found in resilience and hope.
