Etihad Prepares for Charlotte to Middle East Route Launch in March

Etihad Airways is set to enhance its international reach by launching a new route connecting Charlotte Douglas International Airport with Abu Dhabi’s Zayed International Airport. This significant development will begin on March 20, ahead of the previously planned May date. The demand for direct flights between Charlotte and the Middle East has been a pivotal factor in this decision.

Charlotte’s Growing International Presence

This marks the first direct service between Charlotte and the Middle East. Last May, Etihad announced this route, which has since been promoted throughout the Charlotte area. Billboards featuring the slogan, “The fastest way to India and Asia, only with Etihad,” have appeared in locations such as SouthPark Mall and downtown Charlotte.

Strategic Choices Behind the Route

Alpna Mathews, the Regional General Manager of Etihad Airways for the Americas, highlighted Charlotte’s diverse economy as a key reason for selecting the city. The airline believes Charlotte can serve as a crucial hub for travelers from nearby regions, including Raleigh and Greensboro. Mathews noted, “Why not Charlotte? It’s a great city with much to offer.”

Fleet and Aircraft Specifications

Travelers will enjoy flights on the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, the first of its kind stationed at Charlotte Douglas. This state-of-the-art aircraft features improved fuel efficiency and long-haul comfort with:

  • 300-seat capacity
  • Larger windows and a quieter cabin
  • Onboard connectivity with full Wi-Fi and TV streaming

Business class passengers will have access to fully lie-flat beds, private suites, and gourmet dining options — including high-quality plant-based meals.

Streamlining Travel Through Pre-Clearance

Etihad’s new route includes a vital advantage: U.S. Customs pre-clearance at Abu Dhabi airport. Passengers will clear customs in Abu Dhabi, arriving in Charlotte as domestic travelers. This efficient process allows for faster baggage retrieval and quicker access to connecting flights.

Exploring Beyond Abu Dhabi

The airline is collaborating with American Airlines to funnel additional travelers from domestic regional airports. Furthermore, Etihad is actively marketing Abu Dhabi as a must-see destination, offering a complimentary two-night stopover for passengers headed to other global locations like Bangkok or India. Attractions in Abu Dhabi include:

  • WB Hotel Abu Dhabi, the world’s only Warner Brothers-themed hotel
  • Ferrari World Abu Dhabi, featuring the fastest roller coaster
  • Yas Waterworld Abu Dhabi, a premier water park

Flights from Charlotte to Abu Dhabi will be scheduled on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays, with convenient timing for both outbound and return journeys.

Overview of Etihad Airways

Founded in 2003, Etihad Airways is the national airline of the United Arab Emirates, servicing a wide-ranging global network that includes several major cities in North America. The airline transported 22.4 million passengers in the previous year, marking a 21% increase from the previous year. By the end of last year, the fleet expanded to 127 aircraft, a record for the airline.

As Etihad prepares for the Charlotte to Middle East route launch in March, both Mathews and the airline are optimistic about its potential success in the region. She stated, “Our product and service will be something the community loves.”
