Khawaja Joins BBL as Free Agent

Usman Khawaja is looking to continue his T20 career next season, specifically with the Brisbane Heat. Although currently uncontracted in the Big Bash League (BBL), Khawaja has expressed a strong preference to finalize a deal with the club.

Khawaja’s Career Transition

The 38-year-old recently concluded a remarkable international career, retiring after the Ashes series. During the BBL, he took on the role of captain for the Heat as his Test commitments ended. This positions him among a pool of 68 uncontracted players eligible for signing during the nine-day trade and free agency period, which will conclude on February 5 at 5 PM AEDT.

Current Contract Status

Khawaja is one of several unsigned athletes from the Heat, which includes notable Test players like Michael Neser and Marnus Labuschagne. A contract embargo has been imposed, preventing clubs from re-signing or extending player contracts until further notice. Though discussions with unsigned players can continue, public announcements are restricted until the embargo lifts.

Khawaja resides in Brisbane with his family and prefers to stay with the Heat.
He is open to alternate offers if a new deal cannot be achieved.
The player is preparing to transition into a commentary role with Fox Cricket next summer.

His first-class career continues with the Queensland Bulls, who currently sit second in the Sheffield Shield standings.

The Bulls are scheduled to face the competition leaders, Victoria, on February 6 when the Shield resumes. Before the contract embargo, the Heat confirmed 10 out of the 12 players permitted.
