Davie County Schools Ready Campuses, Buses for Safe Post-Winter Return
Davie County Schools are actively preparing for a safe return after winter weather disruptions. With students currently out of class, the district is taking comprehensive steps to ensure readiness.
Coordinated Efforts for Safe Reopening
Superintendent Heath Belcher emphasizes that reopening schools involves coordination among multiple agencies. The school district is collaborating with the North Carolina Department of Transportation, local government officials, and auxiliary services.
Key activities include monitoring road conditions and preparing school campuses. Belcher states, “Strong communication is critical to understanding which roads remain icy or unsafe.”
Campus Preparations
- Crews are clearing parking lots, driveways, and access points at schools.
- Transportation staff are preparing the district’s fleet of 59 buses.
The buses are routinely started, snow is cleared, and vehicles are parked in warmer locations. This ensures they are ready for operation when classes resume. Regular safety inspections continue even during closures to maintain bus readiness.
Safety Remains a Priority
Belcher underlines that safety is the foremost concern as officials determine when students can return. Road crews are assessing problematic areas, including secondary and rural roads. In some cases, staff may return before students to manage administrative tasks and prepare the school buildings.
“We want to bring students back quickly, but only when it’s safe,” adds Belcher.
Future Planning and Safety Measures
Additionally, district leaders are monitoring upcoming weather events that could impact the school calendar. If further storms arise, makeup days or remote learning alternatives may be necessary.
While outdoor cleanup is a priority, work inside schools continues. Crews are inspecting heating systems, internet connectivity, and technology infrastructure to ensure readiness.
Storm Preparedness Success
Belcher noted the district was fortunate to avoid damages from the recent storm, attributing this success to the proactive efforts by the North Carolina Department of Transportation, school administrators, and support staff.
Davie County Schools will continue to assess conditions in the coming days, focusing on a safe return for students and staff.
