Amazon Announces 16,000 Corporate Layoffs in Employee Email

Amazon has announced significant layoffs, affecting 16,000 corporate positions across various regions, including the US, UK, and India. Employees were informed of these changes through emails from Beth Galetti, Amazon’s HR chief. The notifications began on Wednesday morning and outlined the firm’s decision to streamline its corporate workforce.

Details of the Layoffs

The impacted employees will receive a 90-day non-working period with full pay and benefits. Additionally, they will be offered a severance package, transitional benefits, and access to external job placement support. Importantly, employees will also have complimentary access to AWS Skill Builder for a year, aiding their career transitions.

  • Notification Period: Employees to receive full pay and benefits for 90 days.
  • Severance Package: Includes transitional benefits and external job support.
  • Training Access: 12 months of complimentary AWS Skill Builder.

Teams Affected

The layoffs will impact several teams, particularly within Amazon Web Services (AWS). Specific units affected include:

  • AI cloud service Bedrock
  • Cloud data warehouse service Redshift
  • ProServe consulting team

Additionally, retail teams such as the Prime subscription service and the last-mile Delivery Experience team are also facing cuts.

Company Background

These layoffs follow a previous reduction in October, where Amazon cut 14,000 roles. Despite these job losses, Amazon remains one of the world’s largest employers, with over 1.5 million employees globally. However, its corporate workforce makes up a smaller segment, approximately 350,000 of the total employment figures.

As of now, Amazon has not publicly commented on this latest mass job cut. The company aims to support affected employees during this challenging time and has stressed its commitment to aiding their transition.
