Urgent Alert: Sydney Residents Advised to Monitor Closely

Residents of Sydney are being urged to monitor for measles symptoms following the confirmation of two additional cases. One of these cases was contracted locally, linked to a prior infection from a person who traveled to South-East Asia.

Current Measles Situation in Sydney

Health authorities have raised alarms about an increased risk of measles across New South Wales. Since December 1, 2025, there have been a total of 13 confirmed cases, including four cases reported in the last week alone. As international travel resumes, more cases are expected to emerge.

Important Locations of Exposure

The recently identified patients visited several locations in Sydney while unknowingly infected. Notably, healthcare facilities were on this list, but officials assure that these sites do not present an ongoing risk to the public.

Recognizing Symptoms

Dr. Leena Gupta, Director of Sydney Local Health District’s Public Health Unit, emphasizes the importance of recognizing measles symptoms. If residents visited any of the exposure locations reported, they should remain vigilant. Symptoms to look out for include:

  • Fever
  • Runny nose
  • Sore eyes
  • Cough

A distinctive red, blotchy rash that typically appears three to four days after initial symptoms may also develop. Dr. Gupta advises contacting a healthcare provider if symptoms arise, particularly to avoid contact with other patients in waiting areas.

Vaccination Recommendations

Staying updated with vaccinations is crucial, according to Dr. Gupta. The measles vaccine can prevent the disease, especially when administered soon after exposure. Residents born after 1965 should confirm they have received two doses of the measles vaccine, as outbreaks are currently occurring in multiple regions worldwide.

Health Alert for Centennial Parkrun

The ongoing health alert also includes the Centennial Parkrun, where a participant with measles attended on January 17, 2026. This case may or may not be linked to other infections reported earlier. Affected individuals are encouraged to stay informed through updates released regularly by NSW Health.

For the latest updates and exposure locations, residents are advised to monitor the NSW Health website closely. Stay safe and ensure proper health measures are taken during this alert period.
