Arctic Blast Brings Frigid Temperatures to the Province
Québec residents are bracing for a significant drop in temperatures this weekend as an Arctic blast sweeps across the province. The cold weather is expected to arrive in full force by tonight, impacting most regions.
Arctic Blast Brings Frigid Temperatures
According to Environment Canada meteorologist Simon Legault, temperatures have already plummeted in areas like Val-D’Or, where it reached -26°C. Early reports indicated that the wind chill made it feel as cold as -35°C. These extreme conditions are expected to last for approximately 48 hours.
Forecasted Temperatures Across the Province
- Lanaudière and Laurentides: Expected wind chills between -35°C and -40°C.
- Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean: Similar frigid temperatures anticipated.
- Gaspésie: Suffering through severe cold as well.
- Montréal: Anticipated wind chill near -30°C with actual temperatures around -20°C to -25°C.
- Québec City: Possibly even colder nights than Montréal.
- Fermont: Expected to experience the lowest wind chill, potentially reaching -50°C.
While these temperatures do not break records, they still pose risks. Proper clothing can enable residents to enjoy time outdoors despite the harsh environment. Legault advised taking precautions and being aware of the dangers associated with the cold.
Weather Impact and Consequences
This cold spell is projected to help Québec sidestep what has been described as a “historic” winter storm affecting parts of the United States. Heavy snow accumulations of over 60 centimeters are forecasted in the eastern U.S., along with severe cold records and ice warnings.
Simon Legault noted that as Québec sits deep within the cold air mass, it is shielded from the worst of the approaching storm. However, light snow is expected to start falling Sunday evening, particularly in southern Québec, which could lead to accumulations of 10 to 15 centimeters.
Travel and Commuting Challenges
This incoming snow could complicate morning commutes on Monday. Legault warned that even a small amount of snow can create slippery conditions. He suggested that those able to work from home might want to stay indoors on Monday morning.
In summary, the Arctic blast forecasted to hit Québec will bring dangerously low temperatures. Residents should prepare for the chill while taking necessary precautions to stay safe and warm.
